Purchasing food from outlets selling pork.

Q.
I would really like to know why it is that Darul Uloom has certified Mario's vegetarian pizza's when Mario's sells "PORK"? Should we not refrain from buying any food products from such an outlet? How can we be sure that when inspectors are not around that they don't use the same PORK utensils for the vegetarian pizza's as in the case of being in a rush with orders?

A. Muslims should refrain from purchasing food from such outlets that sell pork and pork products. This is more precautions for them since there is the possibility of the mixing of utensils etc. as you have mentioned.

However, this is out of ‘cautions’ and ‘prudence’ and cannot be used to place a ruling on an item that may not contain haram products. As such, when Muslims asked about the Mario’s Vege Pizza, the Darul Uloom Halal Committee looked at the products with which it was made, and the process through which it was baked and handled, and saw that there was nothing to make the product haram. Hence, it was stated to be ‘halal’. This in no way means that ‘Mario’s outlets’ have been certified as halal. The DUHC simply investigated a product and placed a ruling on that specific product.

The possibility of using the same pork utensils may be there, however, the possibility of ‘not using the pork utensils’ also exists. A possibility simply means that ‘a thing can be done’ it does not mean that ‘a thing is being done’. Hence, you cannot apply the ruling of prohibition when there is only a ‘possibility’ and there is no concrete evidence for a thing.

So, based on what is clearly seen from the making and handling regarding the Mario’s Vege Pizza, the DUHC has stated that it is halal to consume seeing that there isn’t any haram ingredient, and that there was a separate knife that was fixed to cut the Vege Pizzas. However, seeing that Mario’s outlets also sell pork and pork products, the Darul Uloom Halal Committee advised Muslims not to buy from these outlets and other similar outlets ‘out of precaution’.

And Allah knows best.
