The Darul Uloom Halaal Committee is the most experienced outfit involved in the certification of products, restaurants and halaal enterprises in the Caribbean. Over the past ten years, we have visited hundreds of outlets and production facilities, many of which have not attained the standards for halaal, while others have been certified continuously, year after year.

For many years, this service has been offered completely free of charge for both businesses and consumers alike. However, over the last two years, we have requested a minimum processing fee which in reality, is an extremely small amount when compared to what other certifying bodies around the world charge. It is still free of charge to the Muslim public as a service of Darul Uloom Trinidad and Tobago Ltd.

Recent events regarding certified outlets which have deliberately broken their contracts with us, has resulted in change in policy with regard to our certification. Any restaurant or food outlet to be certified or re-certified from now onwards, will receive a certificate valid only for three months at a time. Muslims are warned not to purchase from a restaurant whose certificate has expired. These new certificates will carry new issue and expire dates. As we go along, more measures will be put in place to ensure that certified outlets will be authentically halaal.

INFORMATION ON OTHER PLACES AND PRODUCTS

The following places and products do not have Halaal Certificates. However, the DUHC has communicated with these companies and having looked at their products, is able to provide the following information on the Halaal status of some of their products.

ICE CREAMS

After investigation it has been found that many foreign made ice creams have very small amounts of alcohol (less than one percent). We therefore present this information:

  1. Flavorite Foods Ltd.
    All ice creams and lollies are Halaal for consumption, including Lite ice cream, Natural flavours (Coconut, Soursop etc.) and frozen yogurt (lollies) except Rum and Raisin, Cassata and all Flavorite stirred yogurts (cups).
  2. Willies Ice Cream Ltd.
    All ice creams are Halaal for consumption including Sugar Free flavours, except Rum and Raisin and Guinness.
  3. Gelato Authentic Italian Ice Cream
    All flavours are Halaal for consumption except Teramisu,     Rum and Raisin, Guinness and Baileys.
  4. Dairy Bar
    All flavours are Halaal for consumption except Strawberry, Rum and Raisin and Pistachio.
  5. B’s Home Made Ice Cream Ltd.
    All flavours are Halaal for consumption except Rum and Raisin and Guinness.
  6. Tip Top Ice Cream (New Zealand)
    All flavours are not halaal.
  7. Haagen Daaz
    All flavours are not halaal except Strawberry, Chocolate, Coffee and Raspberry Sorbet.
  8. Ben and Jerrys
    All flavours are not halaal.
  9. Blue Bunny
    All flavours are not halaal except Chocolate, Chocolate Champion, Frozfruit – no sugar added (Chunky strawberry), sugar free bomb pops, Sweet freedom ice cream bar (Black Raspberry), sweet freedom fudgelites.

    At present only Soursop and Coconut are halaal.
  11. Cold Stone Creamery
    The following flavours are halaal – Banana, Chocolate, Cinnamon, Coffee, Dark Chocolate, Irish Cream, Sinless Sans Fat Sweet Cream Ice Cream, Sweet Cream Ice Cream.

    The following flavours are halaal – Coconut, Soursop, Pineapple, Peanut, Passion Fruit.
  13. Breyers
    The following flavours are halaal – Coffee, Dulce De Leche and Strawberry.
  14. Edy’s
    The following flavours are halaal – Chocolate, Coffee.
  15. TCBY
    Presently being checked.
  16. NESTLE DIBS
    All contain tiny amounts of ethanol.

OTHER PRODUCTS

  1. KFC.
    All chicken products are NOT Halaal for consumption.
  2. Popeye's
    All outlets are not permissible for consumption.
  3. Church's
    All products are Halaal for consumption at all outlets except mashed potato and gravy. The Port of Spain outlet of this company sells products containing pork and Muslims should refrain from this outlet.
  4. Rituals
    All drinks, doughnuts and muffins are Halaal for consumption. However, one should refrain from cakes since some contain alcohol. The Tastee Jamaican Patties are not certified halaal by us. We advise precaution.
  5. Royal Castle
    All products are NOT Halaal for consumption.
  6. Chief Brand Products
    All spices, condiments, sauces, essences, drinks and snack foods are Halaal for consumption except the chicken and beef pack soups.
  7. KC Confectionery
    All products are Halaal to consume.
  8. Meat From Uruguay
    Beef and Lamb imported from Uruguay and certified by Uruguay Islamic Center and Uruguay Islamic Society has been approved as Halaal for Muslim consumption by the DUHC.

  11. Meat From New Zealand
    Beef, Lamb and Goat imported from New Zealand and certified by New Zealand Meat Management (NZMM) and Federation of Islamic Association of New Zealand (FIANZ) has been approved Halaal for Muslim consumption by the DUHC.

    Imported meats such as lamb, beef, goat and other products from New Zealand and Uruguay are approved Halaal for Muslim consumption. Please request Halaal Certificates.
